SEDIMENTATION
Sedimentation is the process whereby suspended solids are separated out by allowing them to
settle under the influence of gravity. If water is allowed to stand in a tank with no mixing or
agitation, solids which are denser than water will eventually settle to the bottom of the tank. In
normal practice, it is impractical to leave the water standing around indefinitely. Instead, it flows
slowly through specially designed tanks with the minimum of agitation.
