Some British and Japanese scientists say that human beauty is universal. Using computers and pictures of real people, these scientists discovered that attractive people from many different cultures have some features in common. Beautiful women, for example, have high cheekbones and large eyes Attractive men have strong chins and long, straight noses. And these "beautiful" features seem to be the same throughout the world. However, everyone also belongs to a culture, and different cultures have different beliefs and tastes. Many white Europeans and North Americans sunbathe to get a tan. They think dark skin is healthy-looking and attractive. In many Asian and African cultures, however, people use creams to whiten their skin. Western magazines usually show tall, thin models. In India, however, popular movie stars in advertisements often look plump or heavyset. Some cultures, for example in the Middle East, admire men with mustaches and hairy chests because they are considered manly and tough. In some cultures, people create special features. Efe women in Zaire, Africa, sharpen their teeth. Padaung women in Burma make their necks very long with rings. And in Papua New Guinea, the Trobriand Islanders tattoo their faces with many lines. Human beauty is everywhere, but not every culture or individual considers beaut to be the same thing
