Propionibacterium acnes has been described as an obligate anaerobic organism. It is implicated in the development of inflammatory acne by its capability to activate complements and by its ability to metabolize sebaceous triglycerides into fatty acids, which chemotactically attract neutrophils. On contrary, Staphylococcus epidermidis, an aerobic organism, usually involves in superficial infections within the sebaceous unit (Burkhart et al., 1999).
