BANGKOK, 23 April 2013: Airports of Thailand reports its data for March showed increases in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic at six airports under its management.
AoT released details, late last week, showing improvements in March aircraft movements of 15.11%. The number of flights increased from 42,379 to 48,784. Passenger traffic grew 20.86% from 6,608,807 to 7,987,089 for the entire system.
However, Suvarnabhumi Airport suffered an overall dip in performance. The airport registered a loss in international aircraft movements of 3.04% from 20,034 to 19,425 in March. Domestic movements dropped 36.91% from 8,398 to 5,298 movements.
International passenger traffic grew 7.13% from 3,635,029 to 3,894,194, while domestic passenger traffic dropped 33.07% from 1,209,314 to 809,391, partly due to switch of domestic services to Don Mueang earlier in the year.
Understandably, Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport registered massive increases in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic when compared with March 2012, due to the migration of airlines from Suvarnabhumi Airport earlier this year. International aircraft movements increased 1,311.89% from 244 to 3,445, while domestic movements recorded a growth of 150.09% from 3,508 to 8,773.
Don Mueang is now officially once more an international airport with AirAsia serving all of its regional points. All Thailand’s domestic airlines are now based at Don Mueang. Only THAI and Bangkok Airways continue to serve their domestic networks from Suvarnabhumi, due to the need to provide connecting services for their international flights.
The northern gateway, Chiang Mai International Airport, continued to show growth in March. Both international and domestic aircraft movements registered double-digit increases of 58.44% (409 to 648) and 10.18% (2,759 to 3,040). International passenger traffic grew 47.40% (42,750 to 63,012), while domestic traffic grew 21.86% (323,936 to 394,763).
Phuket International Airport also registered growth in all sectors. International aircraft movements gained 25.09%, from 2,714 to 3,395. Domestic movements grew 11.36% from 2,385 to 2,656. Both international and domestic passenger traffic grew 31.34% (448,728 to 589,370).
Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport reported a decline in aircraft movements of 8.59% (652 to 596) while passenger traffic grew 19.20% (80,958 to 96,504). Orient Thai stopped its operations to the far north town earlier this year. It served the airport three times daily.
Hat Yai International Airport reported growth in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic in March. Aircraft movements were up 18.18% from 1,276 to 1,508. Passenger traffic registered a 22.65% growth from 194,739 to 238,854 passengers.
