A major function of industrial engineering is that of measurement - measurement of time and measurement of cost. The loss of this industrial engineering function has meant that many organizations no longer know how much time is required to produce their products or services. For those organizations producing only one product or providing just one service, this is not a significant problem. However, for any organization providing multiple products or services, the lack of this information means that the organization does not now whether it is making or losing money on each product or service. This certainly makes the process of strategic planning difficult, if not impossible.
