Is caused by protozoan parasite carried by mosquitos. Programs to protect people from being bitten by infected mosquitos have eliminated the disease in much of the developed world. However, it still results in over half a million deaths per year primarily in children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Once a person is infected with malaria, they continue to have episodes of the disease and when bitten by mosquitos can cause mosquitos to become infected and carry the disease to other persons. Breaking the cycle of disease involves altering the environment so that mosquitos have fewer breeding places and preventing people from being bitten by mosquitos.
