How does taurine participate in retinal development? While it is
interesting to find a taurine up-regulated gene (TUG1), HOW does this
gene accomplish the development of rods?
Is taurine a neurotransmitter? Evidence exists in the brain and retina,
taurine may be involved in neurotransmission not only through
interactions with the GABA receptor but also with glycine receptors. Is
there a metabotropic taurine receptor? Is there a separate ionotropic
taurine receptor? Data as to the role of taurine in protein phosphorylation
suggests that perhaps a separate mechanism exists.
