Local firm pushes Thais to read more
Local book publisher Nanmeebooks is feeling the economic downturn, with nine-month sales growing by only 5% year-on-year. But the company remains optimistic that brisk sales in the fourth quarter will allow it to achieve a full-year figure of 500 million baht, up by 15%. Nanmeebooks previously forecast 2015 sales growth of 20%, but the economic woes have prompted it to revise down the target to 15% Last year saw a 10% increase in sales. The company expects the Book Expo Thailand, to be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from Oct 21 to Nov 1, will help to boost sales figures for the final three months. "No matter if the Thai economy is good or bad, many still read books, particularly children," assistant managing director Kim Chongsatitwatana said. "We're launching many new titles at the book fair late this month." Some 120 new books will be on offer at the event. Highlights will include an illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, with 1,000 copies expected to be sold. The fair will feature activities aimed at persuading children to read more books via smartphones and tablets.
