Analyses of the β-agonists in edible meats can be classified as screening and confirmatory
methods. Screening methods include two dimensional TLC method using spectro-densitometric
scanning-integration (16) for identification and quantitative analysis of salbutamol and related
impurities in pharmaceutical tablet formulation. Additionally, several EIA method for the screening
of β-agonists in bovine liver (17), (18) and cattle, swine, sheep, horse and poultry (7) were developed.
These methods are sensitive for the estimation of β-agonists in samples within one test but it is nonspecific
for differentiation of each β-agonist. Additionally, false negative results may be obtained in
some cases. The confirmatory methods often used for the analysis of β-agonists in meats are HPLCUV,
HPLC-MS, GC-MS.
