In primary cultures of rat hepatocyte, PA (1–4 mg/ml)
increased %MTT and decreased the release of AST and/or ALT
as compared to the effect of ethanol alone (Table 1).
In rat, single toxic dose of ethanol showed significantly
increased levels of ALT and AST. Pretreatment with PA (25, 50
and 75 mg/kg) and SL (5 mg/kg) 24 h before ethanol decreased
these levels toward normal. PA 75 mg/kg gave the best result similar to SL (Table 2). In ethanol 21 days treated rats, there were
marked increase in levels of AST, ALT, HTG, TNF-and IL-1
