In this work, we have fabricated remarkably durable smart surfaces that, for the first time,exhibit clever solvent-responsiveness of extreme wetting behaviors that display both superoleophobicity with a widesurface tension range of nonpolar oils and quick switch tocounterintuitive superwettability with virtually all the con-tacting polar liquids. Our smart surfaces, allowing nonpolaroil liquids, even for ultra-low surface tension gasoline, suchas hexane (18.5 mN m21) and heptane (20.6 mN m21), toeasily bead up on the surface with a robust extreme oilrepellent composite Cassie-Baxter state,15can cleverly andspontaneously manifest fully wetted Wenzel state16display-ing apparent contact angles of about 0for almost all theaprotic and protic polar solvents covering an extensive rangeof surface tension, thus permitting such liquids like water(72.8 mN m21), dimeth ylformamide (37.4 mN m21), andethanol (22.1 mN m21) to readily spread and permeatethrough. Such a clever solvent-responsive wetting and dewet-ting ability, thereby, m ake our surfaces ideal candidates notonly for effective oil shielding but for highly energy efficientsurface self-cleaning17,18and oil–water separations.
