The reasons employers give for turning away smokers is that they want to increase worker productivity, reduce health costs and encourage healthier lifestyles. This policy reflects the frustration felt that softer methods such as banning smoking on company grounds, offering cessation programs or increasing health care premiums, have not been powerful enough to encourage workers to stop smoking. An Aon Hewitt survey just released found that almost half of employers expect by 2016 to have programs that penalize workers “for not achieving specific health outcomes”.
