Planners want to develop an area near the High Street in St Neots
A scheme to redevelop a rundown part of a market town to preserve its historic character has been unveiled.
Huntingdonshire District Council has revealed plans for the area of St Neots between High Street and Brook Street to the west of St Mary's Church.
Plans for an "urban village" are aimed at attracting sympathetic development.
A council spokesman said: "Not many town centres left in Huntingdonshire preserve historic character but we hope that will be the case in St Neots."
Homes and offices
This area was identified for development in a document produced for Huntingdonshire District Council by the Civic Trust.
It is home to Brook House, one of the most important properties in St Neots, built in the 1700s and protected by the government as a building of special architectural and historic interest.
The council wants to see and "urban village" development with a mixture of homes and shops, with space for some office accommodation.
It envisages Brook House being refurbished as offices, an expansion of the church hall for public use and creative office space in a former chapel.
