On the flag of Suriname , there is a large, yellow, five-pointed star centered in the red band. The star symbol of the Suriname flag represents hope and the unity of all ethnic groups that comprise the Surinamese population.
The red stripe stands for progress and love, the green colored stripe symbolizes hope and fertility, and the white stripe stands for peace, freedom and justice. The red and green colors of the flag were the colors of the political parties during independence.
