Recently, the genome of G. raimondii with D genome as putative contributor to fibre-producing cotton species including G. hirsutum and G. barbadense was sequenced and assembled, which provides reference to assemble EST sequences and analyse the phylogeny, chromosomal location, gene structure, conserved domains and expression profiling. The sequence of D genome could be assisted as reference to scan and identify genes from allotetraploid cotton
Biotechnology is the present and the future of cotton breeding. Applications of biotechnology have made great progress in the creation of novel germplasm, improved fibres and the creation of herbicide-resistant cotton and disease tolerant cotton, especially insect-resistant cotton such as Bt cotton. So we believe that the breakthroughs in cotton genomics and applications of biotechnology will bring new vitality to cotton breeding.
