The two-step flow model helped focus attention upon the interface between mass communication channels and interpersonal communication channels. The model implied that the mass media were neither as powerful nor as directly influential as had previously been thought. Of course, an individual can be exposed to a new idea through either mass media or interpersonal channels and then engage in communication exchanges about the innovation with peers. The communication process does not necessarily consist of just two steps. In some instances there may be only one step, as when the media have direct impact in an individual. In other instances a multistage communication process may occur.
