Currently, one of the most widely practiced analytic approaches is content-based instruction, in which the focus is on making the language meaningful and on getting the student to communicate in the target language. Learners are
encouraged to discuss issues and express opinions on various topics of interest to them in the target language. Topics for discussion might include “Online Romance” or “Taking Responsibility for Our Environment.” Grammar rules are taught on an as-needed basis, and fluency takes precedence over grammatical accuracy. Classroom texts (both written and aural) are generally taken from sources that were not created specifically for language learners, on the assumption that these will be more interesting and relevant to the student. Assessment is based on the learner’s comprehension of the target language.
