Mammoth dimensions
The dam's immense 94-meter-tall walls cover an area measuring 761 m. Situated within Ban Ta Khun district, the dam was the second multi-purpose facility of its kind to be built in Surat Thani province.
A local employee from Pae Bhutawan, a raft resort where we stayed during this trip, told me that the best time of year to visit the dam for rafting is October through to December. Since it was rather overcast and chilly during my visit, I had considered renting a canoe to try and warm up a bit, but eventually we decided to hire a boat and driver (1,500 baht [US$45] per day) from the resort instead. The boat would transport us from the raft resort to some nearby caves, which are considered to be a 'must see' destination if visiting this particular part of the world.
On disembarking from the boat, we needed to walk another 2 km to reach the caves of Tham Taloo and Prakai Petch, which took us about an hour. There were some really picturesque spots along the way, which proved to be ideal places to enjoy a refreshing dip.
