Central executive verbal and spatial WM were assessed using backward administrations of Digit
Span (Wechsler, 2003) and Finger Windows (Adams & Sheslow, 2003), respectively. In Digit Span
Backward, the examinee is asked to recall a series of orally presented numbers in reverse order. As
with Digit Span Forward, raw scores, based on the number of items recalled correctly, are converted
into scaled scores with a mean of 10 and a standard deviation of 2. Unlike the WISC, which includes
both forward and backward administrations of Digit Span, the WRAML includes only a forward administration
of Finger Windows. However, Nigg (2006) recommended administering Finger Windows in
reverse order as a measure of central executive spatial WM (see Manassis, Tannock, Young, &
Francis-John, 2007, for an example of this method). Thus, in the current study, a backward administration
of Finger Windows was included, where the examinee was asked to reproduce the spatial sequence
in reverse order. Given that age norms are not available for Finger Windows Backward, the
backward administration raw score was standardized separately for participants older or younger
than the median age in the sample (10.7 years) to account for age effects. The correlation between
the Digit Span Forward and Backward scaled scores was .26. The correlation between the Finger
Windows Forward scaled score and standardized backward score was .55.
