It was also shown that coffee stimulated phosphorylation of Akt in the satellite cells. Thus, the greater regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle in mice consuming coffee may be due to Akt-mediated cell proliferation of satellite cells. It is not known if the effects were due to caffeine or to other components of coffee, as only caffeinated coffee was included as the treatment in this study. In summary, caffeinated coffee attenuates the loss of muscle mass and strength with age and increases the regenerative capacity which may be due, in part, to improved inflammatory milieu.
