Figure 4.2a shows the trend of plasma LDH over a dose range. The figure shows a
slight rise in LDH. The reader who glances quickly at the diagram may receive the
impression that LDH increases dramatically. This illusion arises because the diagram is
not complete. The y-axis does not start at zero and we are seeing only the top half of the
picture. The whole of a picture must be seen to enable us to understand its full value. A
very different presentation of the data is shown in Figure 4.2b, in which it appears that
the differences are almost negligible. Nevertheless, there was a difference to some
degree: this difference is grossly exaggerated in Figure 4.2a but is almost ‘lost’ in Figure
4.2b.
