Fire – Australia is a country that is prone to major fires more than most other countries. For those working in country areas or heavily wooded areas fire is a real danger to the safety of both the worker and customers. Equally those employed in industries where highly flammable material is used should also be aware of the dangers of fire.
Most workplaces will have an evacuation plan in the event of a fire. You should be trained in this on the first day of employment, but if unsure ask someone. Many workplaces also have evacuation drills which helps you to familiarise yourself with emergency procedures. If you are out of a workplace and in the natural environment (e.g. tour guide) the first thing you should be aware of is the Fire Danger Rating (FDR). If it is high you should have a plan to escape a potential fire. Be aware of the natural area and ensure you are knowledgeable about escape routes. Keep an eye, nose and ear out for danger signs and at the first signal move to safety. Don’t wait to be told what to do because in the vastness of the Australian bush there might not be anyone around to advise you.
