Once exposed, infection or disease will occur depending on the virulence of the organism and the susceptibility of the
host (Geraci 1991). Following several commonsense guidelines can minimize the likelihood of a serious illness. First,
and most important, is the practice of proper hygiene. Hands should always be washed with an antimicrobial soap after
handling animals or working in their environment. Second, any open wounds should be covered to prevent inoculation.
Third, immunosuppressed individuals should avoid exposure to potential pathogens. Fourth, ill employees should not
come in contact with animals or their environment. Finally, if an injury does occur while handling an animal or working
in its environment, proper first aid must be applied
