Interlocking Nail Application

This example of interlocking nail application was done using an 8mm interlocking nail and 3.5mm screws. When applying an interlocking nail, fractures can be reduced by an open or closed approach.
Step 1: Approach the trochanteric fossa for introduction of the interlocking nail. Determine the nail location and drill a pilot hole with either a Steinmann pin and a Jacob’s chuck or a drill bit. To avoid damaging important structures such as the sciatic nerve make the pilot hole in the craniolateral area of the trochanteric fossa.
