And if you’re worried that VR is just the next failed fad, it’s worth noting that the half dozen people interviewed for this article – ostensibly experts in the field of programming VR for mass crowds – all think that it most certainly is not.
“I think you’ll see many film festivals diving into VR in 2016,” said Dan Brawley, executive director of Cucalorus Film Festival – a smaller fest that’s known for their innovative and experimental programming.
“The timing is right and the connections between film festival culture and the emergence of VR are tight and co-dependent. Film festivals will need VR just as much as VR will need film festivals. The symbiotic relationship will be fun to watch over the next decade as VR becomes a more central cultural medium.”
