In general, external insulation methods are preferred around
the world. However, use of insulation blocks composed of EPS
and pumice, which are alternative to building external insulation,
become more widespread with the intention of both thermal insulation
and making buildings lightweight. In this kind of bricks, EPS
is used as thermal insulation material and pumice as lightweight
aggregate. Pumice is approximately composed of 75% SiO2 and
has amorphous and pore structure. It’s insulation of heat and
sound properties are fairly high and its hardness and specific density
are 5–6 (Mohs), 1–2 g/cm3, respectively [16]. EPS (Expanded
Polystyrene Foam) used for heat and sound insulation or packaging
is composed of small, white and interconnected beads and exhibits
superior engineering properties due to its structure such as lightweight,
versatile, energy efficient, and cost effective. Therefore, it
is used as insulation material in buildings and can be moulded into
many shapes for different purposes.
A sandwich insulation brick is a building material consisting of
pumice aggregated outer block and polymer based EPS inner block
which is held together by a core notched on the both blocks and is
similar to a sandwich form. These kinds of sandwich bricks are
preferable building material due to their good thermal barrier,
lightweight and low cost properties.
