A direct comparison of overall accuracy between IKONOS
and CASI (only including habitats surveyed by both
sensors) revealed that CASI provided significantly ( P < .01)
more accurate maps (81% vs. 64%, Fig. 3). Indeed, if a
thematic accuracy of >70% is required at a fine level of
habitat discrimination, CASI is the only suitable instrument
among those compared, although obtaining coverage of
large areas (1000 km2
) is expensive (Fig. 6). If accuracies
of ca. 50 – 60% are acceptable, IKONOS is only costeffective
