Steps to Getting Married in Thailand
1. Obtain an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry from the respective embassy or
consulate in Bangkok. This affidavit will state that you are free to marry. For the
affidavit, see the attachment captioned “Marriage Affidavit”. The form must be completed
and notarized at the Embassy. The notarial fee is $50 per seal. Click on this link to Make an
appointment for a notarial. You will be directed to the U.S. embassy website’s page for
American Citizen services in Bangkok.

2. Translate the Affirmation of Freedom to Marry to the Thai language. See our
attachment for a list of translators in the Bangkok area.

3. Legalize Affirmation of Freedom to Marry at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Take the affidavit and translation to:

4. Get married. After you are married, then register the marriage at the local district office
(Amphur). Submitting the documents and recording the marriage at the amphur validates the
marriage and is legally binding.
The Amphur will also require the following documents:
Your U.S. passport;
If you are divorced or had a previous marriage that has been terminated by spousal death,
the original copy of ALL divorce and/or death certificates must be provided. Make sure
that these documents are translated into the Thai language before you present them to the
Amphur. When marrying a Thai citizen, Thai National Identification Card and House Registration
Document (blue book) is required. Please ask your fiancee for this document.
If either party is under the age of twenty, written permission from the parents must be
submitted, with Thai translation.

5. The marriage certificates written in Thai will be issued.

6. Translate the marriage certificates to English. Use the same translators in the link provided in
this document.

7. Certify the translation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

8. Report the marriage to U.S. Embassy in Thailand.

9. We can prepare the papers when you come back. Please make sure to bring 2 passport photos

REMEMBER:
Before going to Thailand, you must bring with you:
1. Certified copy of your birth certificate
2. Certified copy of your divorce decrees and death certificates – PROOF OF TERMINATION OF
EVERY MARRIAGE YOU EVER ENTERED INTO
