Soil Moisture (continued)
Such probes are about 25–30 cm long, and can sense moisture at the surface or penetrate into the soil.
• The common practice for more precise moisture data requires collecting soil samples from appropriate depths (e.g., surface, root zone, or each horizon) and measuring the weight difference after drying as a percentage of the dry soil weight.
• If repeated moisture measurements will be needed over a period of time, one should consider installing a device that stays in the soil and can be monitored periodically.
