The Wedding Ceremony
Tradition and rituals abound the Thai wedding ceremony. Blessings are requested from the divine and the parties’ families before the couple begin their new life together. Dowries are given, prayers are said and celebrations follow to mark the start of a beautiful union.
The Marriage Registration
The registration of the marriage at the local register (known as the amphur, amphoe or khet) is the legal aspect of a Thai marriage. Unknown to all, it is the registration which legalizes the marriage and formalizes the union as a social unit.
Modern Thais and foreigners who are well aware of this now choose to have the registration directly, instead of having a ceremony first and the registration afterwards.
For couples abroad, registration of their marriage may be done at the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in the foreign country, instead of the amphur.
If the couple has entered into a prenuptial agreement, the same must be registered at the same time that the marriage is registered, and this fact must be noted by the officer at the local register.
Now that you have a concept of marriage in Thailand, be aware of the conditions and requirements of marriage as enumerated under the Thai Civil and Commercial Code, as follows:
