Recently the application of the nanocomposite concept has been
proven to be a promising method to enhance barrier and mechanical properties (Avella et al., 2005). As showed in Table 1,
adding nano-CaCO3particles also decreased transmission rate of O2
and CO2about 15% and 12% in our study. Such properties of nanoCaCO3-LDPE packaging may contribute to the rapid formation of
gas environment with lower O2 concentration and higher CO2
concentration as observed inFig. 1. Hosseinkhanli, Sharif, Aalaie,
Khalkhali, and Akhlaghi (2013)also found that the addition of
organoclay decreased the permeability of oxygen molecules in the
LDPE. As depicted inFig. 1, the O2concentration of nano-CaCO3-LDPE packaging fresh-cut yam was significantly lower than that of
LDPE packaging, while the CO2 concentration was much higher
than LDPE packaging. Through hindering the penetration of gas
molecules and increasing their average path length, the high aspect
ratio of the added particles might develop a permeation barrier in
