Active chlorine detection or quantification is usually carried out in water to which chlorine or hypochlorite has previously been added, to check for any excess of this disinfecting agent. The analysis should be carried out immediately after sampling, at the spot. Strong illumination and agitation should be avoided after sampling and during analysis. If immediate analysis cannot be made, drinking water samples can be stored in completely full dark bottles in a refrigerator for 3 h.
