A. Introduction
Microgrid is a cluster of controllable loads and Distributed
Generators (DGs) and is capable of operating both in gridconnected
and island mode [1, 2]. Although wind is the never
ending resource of energy and its use is growing at a very fast
rate for the generation of electricity, yet the power generated
by wind turbines is highly unpredictable. Therefore, the wind
power generated cannot be utilized directly as it can lead to
operation and planning related problems of the power system
[3]. ESS can play a significant role in improving the quality of
the power generated by controlling output of the wind power
plant. This paper focuses on the operation and characteristics
of some important and useful ESS, which can be used for
stationary applications. In addition, ESS applications have
been classified according to their full power duration of the
storage. Although the increased integration of wind power is
desirable, yet it is must to maintain the stable operation by
mitigating: intermittency of generated wind power,
mismatching of load and unhealthy impacts on stability of the
grid voltage with the application of ESS.
