A survey on roles, teamwork, information, board member/CEO evaluation, and educational philosophies was administered to board members and administrators. This survey provided much of the data for the analysis of board culture and group member beliefs about governance. Each group was observed to provide an orientation to the setting and also to provide data on board culture and the social elements of board interaction. Following this period of observation, each group was asked to identify a critical decision that could be explored though the use of the Critical Decision Method, which is a group interview method that uses cognitive probing to uncover knowledge structures used in decision-making. One decision point in each of the group's critical decision narratives was identified, and the groups were asked to respond to questions designed to elicit the knowledge structures in use at the time of the decision.
