Some salivary glands are functioning at birth, but the majority do not begin to secrete saliva until about age 2 to 3 months, when drooling is common. The stomach capacity is limited to about 90 ml in an average-sized full-term infant (7.5 pounds [3.4 kg]); thus the infant requires frequent small feedings. Newborns who breast-feed usually have more frequent feedings and more frequent stools than infants who receive formula.
