The caste which builds the nest in all the higher termites is the sterile
worker helped, in some cases at least, by the larger soldier nymphs. Thus we
have a complete control over any possibility of the inheritance of an acquired
character. No nest-building habit or structural modification of a sterile caste
acquired during ontogeny could be transmitted to the succeeding generation.
