The key to successful music pedagogy is to stress music fundamentals,
teach them one at a time in logical sequence, and teach them thoroughly.
The first and foremost fundamental is ear training. Students need to be
taught from the very beginning the importance of listening to tone, in-
tonation, articulation, and musical expression. Teachers who fail to do
this can never hope to build a successful instrumental program or
achieve valid musical objectives. Students need to be taught proper
musical concepts. The teacher needs to be a good musician in order to
make this possible.
