Overnight storms caused flooding that blocked several parts of the Mitraphap Highway from Bangkok to the Northeast, with more heavy rain forecast for the next two weeks.
The weather office warned on Thursday that more rain is on the way for Bangkok and nearby, particularly in the afternoon and evening, and that storms will continue to around Oct 21.
The southwest monsoon is lying across the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand, Meteorological Department director-general Wanchai Sak-udomchai said on Thursday.
City residents are especially advised to be prepared for heavy rain on Saturday,
Mr Wanchai said the rain will continue until Oct 20-21 when it will begin to decrease and the monsoon trough will move down to lie across the South. At the time, rain in the South will intensify while the cold season will begin in the North and the Northeast.
Bangkok deputy governor Amorn Kijchavengkul said there are two areas of particular concern.
They are Song Wat area, where preparations are underway for the construction of a Chao Phraya River embankment ,and Kiak Kai area, where the new parliament building is under construction.
Floodwalls have been built to block the openings through which water may flow from the river into the inner city, he said.
In Nakhon Ratchasima, the rain that soaked the province throughout last night led to rainwater flowing from Khao Yai Thiang, Khao Phaeng Ma and other mountains to flood the Mitraphap Road at many spots.
A 500-metre section of Mitraphap Road from the weighing station to the CP factory in tambon Lat Bua Khao of Si Khiu district was 30-60 centimetres under water and impassable to cars and pickup trucks.
A section about two kilometres long on Mitraphap Road from the Si Khiu Municipality to tambon Ma Klua Mai in Sung Noen district was hit by a flash flood that left it 30-60cm under water, making it impassable to small vehicles.
The floods caused heavy traffic congestion on both sides of the road.
Police, volunteers and rescue units were helping people whose vehicles were stalled by the floodwater and supplying them with drinking water.
Torrential overnight rain was also reported in many areas of neighbouring Buri Ram province.
