The findings herein obtained from
dog n. 15 are in turn emblematic, suggesting that a single
administration could be effective in eliminating circulating
MF and allergic dermatitis, but cannot be sufficient to
kill all adult individuals living in the subcutaneous tissue
of infected dogs. In fact, dog n. 15 was symptomatic and
microfilariemic at the beginning of the study (Table 1) and,
though the skin lesions disappeared after treatment and
did not recur throughout the study, the dog was found to
be again positive for MF in January 2010 (Table 2), thus
showing that some adult D. repens survived after the single
treatment performed in October 2009.
