Chomsky's view of language as a system of rules was interpreted in the cognitive
code method to mean that perception and awareness of rules precedes the use of
these rules, and that a conscious grammatical understanding of a language rule
should precede the provision of opportunities for practice in language teaching
(e.g. Chastain, 1971).
