Learning Resource Centers (or Learning Labs)
One of the fastest-spreading new types of physical facility in recent years is the learning resource center, sometimes called a learning lab. Most often these are areas added on to or adjacent to libraries that are equipped with study carrels, computer assisted instruction terminals, microfiche viewers, film and filmstrip projectors, learning packages or modules, teaching machines, and the like. They almost always have counselors, tutors, or mentors in attendance. They are most often used for individualized instruction for remedial or "developmental" purposes, but in at least one School of Medicine (McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario) the center has replaced the classroom as the site of advanced study.
