The negative impact of televised games means that while attendance, and by implication revenue, falls by a substantial amount, a facility fee received by clubs more than compensates them for this fall in attendance. The facility fee is a feature of the Premier League’s contract with the broadcaster. Unlike other European leagues where the broadcast rights are sold on an individual basis, the Premier League pools its rights and sells them collectively. The revenue received from the sale of the rights is divided into three parts : basic award, facility fees and merit award. The basic award is worth 50 per cent of the rights fee and the remaining 50 per cent is equally divided between the facility fees and merit award
