The unadjusted hospital mortality for patients who
developed ICU-acquired hypernatremia was higher than
that for those who were hypernatremic in the first 48 hours of
the ICU stay (28%, data not shown) and was nearly triple that
of patients who never experienced hypernatremia. Patients
who developed ICU-acquired hypernatremia also had nearly
triple the ICU LOS than those who did not develop
hypernatremia.
