This chapter describes the use of rank tests and estimates in the linear model. The chapter reviews the current practical status of statistical methods based on the ranks in the linear model. In addition to describing various approaches to the construction of tests and estimates, the chapter also provides an extensive discussion of the computational issues involved in implementing the procedures. In considering tests based on ranks, the chapter considers various practical aspects. The practical questions are: (1) Does a nominal size-α test maintains its size for small to moderate sample sizes? (2) What methods are available for computing the test? Can the computations be carried out using existing packages, or are special programs required? and (3) Are there small sample differences in the powers of the various tests? The chapter describes three methods of constructing tests based on ranks, and summarizes the state of each method in the light of these questions.
