The success of these fisheries is particularly laudable given the inherent challenges in sustainably managing the fishery : the rock fish targeted by the fishery are long-lived and slow-growing ; numerous species with different levels of productivity are caught together ; and rock fish inhabit rocky habitats, which are sensitive to the impacts of trawling. In the face of these challenges, effective strategies were needed to minimize impacts on targeted and incidentally caught species(see 3.2 for details), as well as the habitat.
