IDV – Individualism VS. Collectivism
IDV, Or Individualism dimension indicates interdependence of people in each country that maintain among their members. The score 0-50 indicates high collectivism, or low individual, means people tend to think about the others and prefers being in groups. 51-100 indicate high individual, or low collectivism, means people tends to think about themselves and only their family first and they do not depend on anyone but themselves.
The IDV score of Myanmar is 51 which means they still prefer being in group but they do not depend on the group all the time (Rarick& Nickerson,2006). According to the interview, Mr. Paul prefer to stay in group only at college, but he still keeps space for himself to stay alone and not feeling uncomfortable if going out alone. Myanmar people quite independent but still prefer being in group sometimes.
The IDV sore of Thailand is 20 which mean Thailand are collectivist society. Thai people tends to concerns about keep the relationship among their group and avoid having problems with their group by saying “yes” to others to showing agreement. In meeting, it is hard to be openly discussed. And they believe that personal relationship is the key to have business that they use a lot of time to build relationship to others (Thailand, n.d.).
