CABH-2 was submitted to a detoxification treatment using different charcoal forms: granule (GAC 830W, CA1, Norit,Netherlands) and powder (Quimibras, Brazil). The hydrolysatetreated with granule charcoal was named CABH-3, and the onetreated with powder charcoal was termed CABH-3. In both cases,3 wv−1% activated charcoal was added to the hydrolysate and maintained under agitation of 200 rpm at 35◦C for 2 h. The detoxified concentrated hemicellulosic hydrolysate was recovered by vacuum filtration and sterilized at 110◦C for 10 min in autoclave. The experimental assays performed are summarized in the flowchart shown in Fig. 1, where all the steps performed for obtaining xylitol in the fermentation broth are described.
