Rural economic development is a national priority in many
developing countries. However, rural areas frequently lack the safe
and uninterrupted electricity supply that is needed for the
development of numerous economic activities. At the same time,
the remoteness, isolation, and low electricity demand of many
rural communities make them very unlikely to be reached by the
extension of the power grid.
