McDonald’s in Brazil was the most popular fast-food restaurant in a country that seemed to love
fast food. At first, growth proceeded quickly and franchises were often opened in the backyard
of existing outlets, sometimes causing franchisees to sue the company. The owners’ concerns
were cannibalization of existing stores sales and growing without consideration of the areas
served by current locations. Some Brazilian store owners also complained about the extremely
high rents charged by the company.
