In the current waste management system described in Scenario A1, food waste in Hong Kong, 3584 t per day (neglecting the 1.4 t treated in the pilot composting plant), is collected, transported, and then landfilled. The vehicles used for food waste collection and transportation operate in accordance with Euro III emission standards, which were described elsewhere (Larsen et al., 2009). According to the operational data and the locations of the facilities, the average distance that food waste is transported to the landfill sites is approximately 50 km. The unit fuel consumption of 0.19 L/(t km) is an average value obtained from the truck drivers in terms of mixed waste transportation. Given that there is no significant difference between transporting mixed waste and food waste, the unit fuel consumption is considered available for food waste. The sites dispose of food waste together with other solid waste. Table 4 provides the information on the material and energy inputs obtained from the operators, with only the food waste contribution considered.
